A pumpkin grown by the Eglāji family in Jelgava municipality topped Latvia's largest-pumpkin competition at 355 kilograms. The family was entering for the first time, according to Receptes.
The autumn event took place at the Children's Hospital, combining the weighing contest with activities for patients, families and staff. Maxima Latvija is also donating 100 kilograms of pumpkins for meals served to hospital patients.
Visitors can see the largest entries in the hospital's Taureņu square in Riga until 18 October. After the display, the competition pumpkins will become food for animals at Riga Zoo. The event connects the local harvest with both hospital cooking and a further use for the enormous produce.
